What Is Couples Therapy Intensive?

A Couples Intensive gives you something weekly therapy cannot: extended, uninterrupted time to focus entirely on your relationship. Instead of working in 75-minute sessions, you spend a half day, one day, or two dedicated days doing focused, immersive work together at our Concord, Massachusetts office.

In weekly therapy, just as you begin getting to the heart of something, the session may be ending. An intensive allows us to stay with the conversation, follow important patterns as they emerge, and work through them without having to stop and pick up again the following week. That continuity creates space to go deeper—to understand what is keeping you stuck, work through difficult moments as they happen, and begin creating meaningful change while you are still in the room together.

Why Couples Choose a Therapy Intensive

Why Couples Choose a Therapy Intensive

  • An affair or disclosure just happened, and waiting seven days for another session feels impossible.

  • You’ve given weekly therapy an honest effort, but keep ending up at the exact same impasse.

  • Executive travel, shift work, or family demands make committing to a standing weekly appointment unsustainable.

  • You need clarity before a major milestone, like a wedding, a move, a new baby, or a decision about the relationship's future.

  • You’re unable to meet weekly due to life and work constraints.

  • You are both ready to sit in the same room, roll up your sleeves, and do deep, dedicated work together.

What We Help With

After a Recent Disclosure

When secrets or betrayals come to light, an hour a week isn't enough to contain the shock. An intensive provides the immediate, structured container required to stabilize the crisis.

Schedules That Never Hold

Ideal for couples whose travel calendars, shift work, or parenting responsibilities prevent weekly office visits.

Stuck in Weekly Therapy

Months of sessions that feel supportive in the moment but fail to change your day-to-day dynamic between appointments.

Before a Transition

Establish deep emotional alignment and clear ground rules before marriage, moving in, blending families, or having a child.

A Decision with a Deadline

For partners questioning whether to stay together, an intensive helps you face the core question directly instead of circling it for another year.

Distance to Close Quickly

Couples who have slowly grown apart over years and want a focused, concentrated path back to real intimacy.

Life After a Couples Intensive

The goal is not to leave with everything resolved. It is to leave understanding your relationship—and each other—differently.

  • You develop a shared understanding of your relationship story, including how each of you experienced the moments that shaped you.

  • You have a clearer language for talking about difficult subjects without immediately falling into the same misunderstandings.

  • You leave with a plan for the weeks ahead and practical ways to respond when old patterns begin to reappear.

  • You learn how to recognize the cycle behind the argument, rather than continuing to fight about the same issue.

  • You both see the pattern between you as it happens, creating opportunities to interrupt it, repair, and respond differently.

Most importantly, you leave with a clearer understanding of what happens between you, why it happens, and what you can begin doing differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a Couples Intensive?

Intensives are offered as a half day, one full day, or two full days of focused work. The right amount of time depends on what is happening in your relationship, how long the patterns have been in place, and what you hope to accomplish. We’ll recommend the format we believe will serve you best during your initial consultation.

Is an intensive better than weekly couples therapy?

Not better—different. Weekly therapy provides time to make changes gradually and practice new ways of relating between sessions. An intensive creates extended, uninterrupted time to go deeper without having to stop just as important work is unfolding. Some couples begin with an intensive and transition to shorter-term weekly follow-up sessions. Others begin in weekly therapy and choose an intensive when they need more time to work through something important.

Do we need to travel to Concord, Massachusetts?

Yes. Couples Intensives are our dedicated in-person offering and take place at our Concord, Massachusetts office. We welcome couples from the greater Boston area, throughout New England, and beyond.

Will we still need therapy after our intensive ends?

It depends on your relationship and your goals. Some couples leave with enough clarity, direction, and momentum to continue the work on their own. Others benefit from follow-up sessions to reinforce what they learned and continue working on patterns that need more attention. At the end of your intensive, we’ll give you our assessment of where things stand and what we believe would be most helpful next.

Can an intensive help immediately after an affair or betrayal?

Yes. The period following the discovery or disclosure of an affair can be disorienting and emotionally intense. There may be far more to talk through than a weekly session comfortably allows. An intensive gives you extended time to slow things down, understand what has happened, begin addressing the immediate rupture in trust, and determine what comes next. The goal isn’t to resolve an affair in a day or two. It is to create enough space to begin the work thoughtfully and establish a clearer path forward.

The First Step Is a Conversation

Schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation. We’ll hear what’s happening in your relationship, what you’re hoping to change, and help you determine whether a Couples Intensive is the right next step.

You don’t need to know what kind of therapy you need. That’s what the consultation is for.
